Sexual Risk Behavior: HIV, STD, & Teen Pregnancy Prevention

Many young people engage in sexual risk behaviors that can result in unintended health outcomes. For example, among U.S. high school students surveyed in 20111
  • 47.4% had ever had sexual intercourse
  •  33.7% had had sexual intercourse during the previous 3 months, and, of these 15.3% had had sex with four or more people during their life
Sexual risk behaviors place adolescents at risk for HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and unintended pregnancy:
  • An estimated 8,300 young people aged 13–24 years in the 40 states reporting to CDC had HIV infection in 20092
  •  Nearly half of the 19 million new STDs each year are among young people aged 15–24 years3
  •  More than 400,000 teen girls aged 15–19 years gave birth in 20094
To reduce sexual risk behaviors and related health problems among youth, schools and other youth-serving organizations can help young people adopt lifelong attitudes and behaviors that support their health and well-being—including behaviors that reduce their risk for HIV, other STDs, and unintended pregnancy.

Abstinence from vaginal, anal, and oral intercourse is the only 100% effective way to prevent HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy. The correct and consistent use of male latex condoms can reduce the risk of STD transmission, including HIV infection. However, no protective method is 100% effective, and condom use cannot guarantee absolute protection against any STD or pregnancy.

What is TOP®?
TOP® is a nine month, teen leadership program that encourages character development through candid discussions, peer interactions and community service. TOP® can be:
  • Integrated with Core subjects
  • Used as an in-school elective
  • Serve as an after-school program; or
  • Serve as a component of an out-of-school enrichment program. This might include a social club, recreational program or other "gap" time activity.

What will youth learn?
There are three essential goals to help teens build a foundation for success:
  • Healthy Behaviors that promote positive, constructive actions that pave the way for a lifetime of success while reducing incidences of teen pregnancy, re-occurring pregnancies and incarceration
  • Life Skills that build competencies necessary for youth to mature into healthy, self-sustaining adults
  • Sense of Purpose that inspires a positive self worth as they contribute to their communities through meaningful service
Is the Program Successful?
YES! TOP® is successful because it provides schools, organizations and communities with a flexible, tested framework for creating or enhancing local youth development efforts. TOP® is also successful because the curriculum includes four age appropriate levels. Among the core studies are:
  • Communication and assertiveness
  • Relationships and Self Worth
  • Goal Setting and Decision Making
  • Development and Healthy Living
  • Community Service Learning
How can my school or organization take part in the program?
Using Wyman's TOP®, LifeGuard Youth Development will provide all training and curriculum to schools and organizations. A program packet is available with complete details. If you are interested in more information, call (816) 836-TEEN (8336). This is a federally funded program. No fees required.

Together, we can guide our youth to the TOP!
